Gap Analysis Template

Conduct a Gap Analysis to Identify, Assess, and Address Areas of Improvement

A gap analysis is used to identify the discrepancies between the current state and the desired state of something in the workplace. Most often, it is used to pinpoint specific areas where an individual, team, department, or organization is falling short in terms of performance, skills, resources, culture, or strategy.

Use this Gap Analysis Template to conduct your own. When you do so, be sure to follow these steps:

  1. State the area your gap analysis will focus on.
  2. Define the goal of your gap analysis.
  3. Assess the current state of whatever it is you are evaluating.
  4. Define the desired/future state.
  5. Compare the current state and desired state so you can identify where discrepancies or gaps exist.
  6. Investigate the root causes of those gaps.
  7. Prioritize those gaps in order of importance.
  8. Create an action plan.
